    Description

    Here is a wooden box made from fragments of the USS Yankee which saw action off of Cuba during the Spanish American War. The box measures 10” wide and 2 1/2” in height and has a brass plaque on the front indicating its origins. The 406 foot gunship was commissioned in 1898 and carried ten 5” guns, six 6 pounder guns, and several Colt machine guns. The Yankee saw action in the Battle of Guantanamo Bay and with the Cuban blockade off Santiago, Cuba and was involved in gunfights with various Spanish gunships, and also shelled several Cuban forts. She was also used for patrols during the occupation of the Dominican Republic. The Yankee sank in 1908 when it ran aground. The materials from the ship were incorporated into this box.
